Grace by Rev. Dr. Michelle WadleighAug 30, 2021
“I do not at all understand the mystery of grace - only that it meets us where we are, but does not leave us where it found us.” Anne Lamott
Yes, I’m a minister, but no, I am not religious. Neither was my upbringing. Churches were for weddings, funerals, and baptisms. The only time I wished I was religious was out of jealousy for all the pomp and circumstance that some family and friends had. You know, little girls marrying God and all that – that was how it was explained to me.
While I do not have a calling to go to “church”, a traditional one anyway, nor do I feel any sense of loss for not being indoctrinated, I am deeply and profoundly grateful for finding Divine Holiness, complete Unconditional Love, and GRACE. The holiness, love, and grace of which I speak are hidden and waiting for me around every corner. It displays itself as the whisper of the wind, the bark of a tree, the giggle of a baby, and sharing a good laugh or a cry with a really good friend.
This Grace has quietly saved my life more times that I can tell you. It held out its hand when I was melting down and feeling justified in my anger or upset, and it reminded me that the only requirement for being saved was to reach out my hand and say Yes!
Yes and Grace are artistic bedfellows, creating through flow and movement. One exists inside the other emphasizing and expressing the beauty of the other. Each time they encounter a willing soul, they dance in the delight of their own service. I have been “graced” when I was in the murky waters of depression, confusion, and full-on self-judgment and self-loafing. Yes, it met me right there in the middle of that and it was beautiful.
The invitation for the healing presence of Grace does require one more thing – SURRENDER. My plea for Grace was always preceded by a total state of surrender. Then, in my naked surrender, Grace presented itself and I was reminded of my wholeness. Grace is free to all, requires no explanation or dues, just the invitation. Thank God, thank Good, thank Grace.
